In its Q2 2013 stockholder newsletter, Bayer noted that, excluding claims already settled, the number of claimants in pending Yaz/Yasmin lawsuits and claims in the US totaled about 5,400.

As noted by Bayer,

Claimants allege that they have suffered personal injuries, some of them fatal [emphasis added], from the use of Bayer’s drospirenone-containing oral contraceptive products such as Yasmin and/or Yaz or from the use of Ocella and/or Gianvi, [and] generic versions of Yasmin and YAZ, respectively, marketed by Barr Laboratories, Inc. in the United States.

Bayer further noted that as of July 8, 2013, it had reached agreements to settle the claims of 6,760 injured Yaz/Yasmin/Ocella patients in the U.S. for a total of $1.4 billion. Bayer also indicated it knew of approximately 2,800 additional claimants with whom settlements had not yet been made, and that it would “continue to consider the option of settling such individual lawsuits in the U.S. on a case-by-case basis.”
